S tep 1 – Configure FTP Components: In this guide, I will take you through to install the FTP server components on your server. You may also want to see this guide: Warning: FTP over TLS is not enabled, users cannot securely log in: You appear to be behind a NAT Router, please configure the passive mode settings and forward a range of ports in your router. While it is not a better solution to the IIS FTP role, it is a quick solution if you do not use IIS and use a Windows-based control panel that doesn't offer FTP. It also offers a simpler user management that is presented upfront on the server application's interface. Since Windows's built-in FTP does not support secure FTP, you could use the Filezilla Server as an option to support secure FTP. See this guide on how to access FTP Server from your browser: How to create a shortcut and access Filezilla from Windows Explorer. Setting up a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server on Windows 10 is a relatively convenient way to upload and download files from virtually anywhere to your device. As described in his guide “ How to install and configure a FileZilla Server on Windows“, FTP uses two ports, one for connection and one for sending data. Right-click in the right pane and select 'Add a network location'. To do this, open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. To connect to an FTP server, open a File Explorer or Windows Explorer window, click the 'This PC' or 'Computer'. It could also reside outside the network. For an external connection to the ftp server, you must configure the firewall. The device transferring the files can be within the same network where the FTP server is configured. Step 3 Configure Windows Firewall rules: Since you are running the built-in firewall on Windows 10, connections to the FTP server are blocked by default. The server hosts the files to be shared and the client provides the interface to access, download, or upload files to the file server. In the bottom window is Manage security settings. To create a rule, select the Inbound Rules or Outbound Rules category at the left side of the window and click the Create Rule link at the right side. So, it seems I have a workaround in disabling/enabling the firewall before and after the transfer. I've also noticed, when I disable the Windows 2003 Firewall, command line FTP is suddenly much faster, and reaches the same speed as FileZilla. I can't use this approach though, because we want this to run automatically and FileZilla can't be scripted. If I transfer the file manually, using FileZilla's GUI, it runs considerably faster and is done in a couple of minutes. The servers are 2003 (sending) and 2008 (receiving). Uncheck 'Log on anonymously' and enter the username you have configured for your FTP server. Enter the IP address and port of your FTP server, and click next. It's painfully slow (taking about 30 minutes) and occasionally terminates before the transfer has completed. Open 'Computer' and right click in a blank area, then select 'Add a network location.' The 'Add Network Location' wizard will appear, click next twice. To add an application rule, click the Add rule button. The programs for which rules have already been created will be displayed. Click the Settings button in the Firewall module. We have a scheduled task that transfers a large file (~130 MB) between two Windows servers using the Windows command-line FTP program. Click on the Protection button, situated on the left sidebar of the Bitdefender interface.
